The last week or so has flown by in a whirlwind of new cookbook excitement. Here are a few highlights… The Harrow Fair always starts the Thursday before Labour Day. All entries for the fair must be submitted on the Wednesday and it’s always a busy day in the kitchen. I entered 3 pies this year and a crab apple jelly. After checking the results on Thursday afternoon, I learned that I won 1st for my crab apple jelly and 3rd for my apple pie, a new recipe I was trying (Hot-Buttered Rum Apple Pie). I was slightly disappointed that I didn’t do better but that is one of the things I really love about entering baking at the Harrow Fair – the competition can be stiff! This year, the pie auction at the fair did better than ever – over $15,000 raised for the women’s and children’s shelter in Windsor! It’s an election year and apparently, that does help the local politicians to open their wallets pretty wide. Our friend, Leslie Balsillie (owner of the Fruit Wagon in Harrow, with her husband Doug) won 1st prize in the most coveted pie category – the “pie auction” category. Her raspberry-cherry pie was auctioned off for a whopping $3550.00!!! Now that’s an expensive pie. And I’m pleased to report that the recipe is available in The Harrow Fair Cookbook on page 167. Friday afternoon The Kitchen Table Cookbook’s arrived in Harrow, hot off the presses. My husband drove them from Toronto in record time and I was set up and selling the book in the United Church Pie Tent in no time. The thing I love about selling the books at the fair is that I get to see so many friends and relatives that I normally don’t bump into any other time. By the end of each day, my voice was hoarse but I wouldn’t have changed a minute of it! So many smiling faces and so much happiness. I love Harrow! It would be impossible to pull off a weekend at the fair without some serious support… Big thanks to Alan, Gavin, Ellen, Chuck, Sharon, Lori, Jake, Annie, Tammie, Tara, Kristin, Missy, Vicky, Barry, Jim, Carol, etc, etc…. Now I’m back home in Mount Albert, ready for the next adventures to come my way. If you are looking for signed copies of The Kitchen Table Cookbook, let me know and I’ll make it happen. Happy Cooking!!!
