When Mrs. C was showing me the ropes, she mentioned that the goats need to be sheared and said I could do it if I wanted to. My eyebrows shot up and I saw a twinkle in her eyes. Considering I caught a loose chicken this morning and I felt like I’d won the lottery, shearing animals is probably not something I’ll undertake without a lot of supervision and training.
The 3 goats on the farm are of the angora variety and, along with the sheep, they provide Mrs. C with an abundance of fleece for spinning. She spins the fleece into yarn and then dyes it in natural colours. The yarn is then knit into socks or sweaters. The process is quite a bit more labour intensive than I’m making it sound but I love the thought of it.
